Prjónagleði 2018 – Celebrating 100 Years of Icelandic Independence and Sovereignty
Prjónagleði – “Knitting Delight” is an annual knitting festival held by the Icelandic Textile Center and collaborators.
In 2018, Iceland celebrates 100 years as a free and sovereign state. Prjónagleði – “Knitting Delight” is one of the 100 projects chosen by representatives of the Icelandic parliament to be part of the official programme of celebrations during the centenary year. To mark the occasion of 100 years of sovereignty, admission is free to the festival’s site and marketplace. A knitting competition will be held where the task is to knit an Icelandic sweater with relevance to what is being celebrated – whether past, present or future. Frontrunners will be displayed during the festival, alongside knitting works of elementary school students from the local community.
Prjónagleði also features more than 20 different workshops held at Kvennaskólinn, the former women’s college in Blönduós, lectures on various knitting-related topics, a crafts market, entertainment and festive dinner.
We look forward to welcoming knitting enthusiasts and knitters to be from all around the world here in Blönduós, northwest Iceland!
