LECTURE: The Woman Dressed in Blue (A textile find from a 10th c. Icelandic grave and its reconstruction)
SPEAKER: Marianne tóvinnukona

Location: Textile Museum/Heimilisiðnaðarsafnið
Language: Icelandic
Fee: ISK 4.000

Lecture Description: At the end of the 9th century, during the settlement period of Iceland’s landnáma, a baby girl was born somewhere in the Celtic area of where now is Scotland, England or Wales. She came to Iceland as a child of 5-10 years old and died at the age of about 20. She was buried in a heathen grave kuml at Ketilsstaðir in East Iceland. According to the custom she was accompanied by several grave goods; a necklace of over 40 beads, a spinning whorl of soap stone from Norway, two touchstones (for testing the purity of the silver), a curious light blue chalcedony that may have been used as a charm. A trefoil brooch and two oval brooches rounded up the ensemble. In textile archeology brooches provide a wealth of information not only as a dating tool, but also about the fabric that is preserved under them.

From these fragments two textile experts made a reconstruction of the woman’s dress during an artist residency here at the Textile Center in Blönduós which will be presented at Prjónagleði 2018 in Blönduós. Come and listen to a talk about a fascinating archaeological find and see how a woman of the 10th century would have been dressed from head to toe.
